As we age, bone and collagen are lost, and fat is redistributed. As a result, fat pads above and below our eyelids grow more noticeable, causing sagging brows, droopy upper lids, and bags under our eyes. Eyelid surgery, often known as blepharoplasty, is a technique that improves the appearance of the eyelids by removing extra skin and fat. Sagging skin around the eyes might impair eyesight. A blepharoplasty treatment might help vision difficulties by making the eyes appear younger and more alert.
Different Types of Eyelid Surgeries
Eyelid surgery can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or both at the same time. The following are the various ways for eyelid surgery.
Surgery on the upper eyelids. This surgery restores the upper eyelids by making an incision along the upper eyelid's natural crease. A small quantity of tissue is removed, and the incision is repaired with a tiny stitch. Ultimately, this will give the upper eyelid a tighter, more lifted appearance.
Surgery on the lower eyelids. An incision along the lower lash line is the most commonly utilised method for lower eyelid surgery. Again, a sufficient amount of tissue is removed, with fat pads excised or repositioned as necessary. This will result in a tighter appearance and less undereye drooping. Dr. Murali frequently use this method.
The transconjunctival method. It employs a subciliary incision made along the lower eyelashes. This is done to hide the scars after the procedure.
Resurfacing of the eyelids with a CO2 laser. This procedure does not require the use of a scalpel or stitches. It is appropriate for upper and lower eyelid droop or laxity. The laser resurfaces the skin, promoting collagen and tightening the tissue as a result. If you are not yet ready for surgery, this is a good option.
Benefits
You appear younger and more alert. The most prevalent motive for eyelid surgery is to appear younger. Collagen production decreases as we age, causing the skin to lose suppleness gradually. Skin sags and droops due to a lack of elasticity and the constant pull of gravity. A blepharoplasty is a safe and effective procedure to remove excess skin and give your eyes a younger appearance.
Increased self-assurance. People's eyes are one of the first things they notice. A person who has sagging skin around their eyes or drooping eyelids may appear fatigued or older than they are. It may cause social encounters and images with loved ones to be avoided rather than appreciated as they should be. Eyelid surgery can boost self-esteem and make social interactions more enjoyable.
Field of vision has improved. Some people may have so significant skin laxity that it interferes with their vision. These eyesight issues can be reduced or eliminated with upper eyelid surgery.
Excellent results with minimal scarring. Scarring is a consideration when considering surgery. That decision is significantly easier to make with eyelid surgery than with most. When we do this surgery, we conceal the little incisions inside the natural folds of your eyelids or along your lash line. After the initial healing period, the incision is barely noticeable if at all.
Long-term outcomes. Many cosmetic procedures available today do not provide long-term results. This is especially true for non-surgical procedures. There are non-surgical options for upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation, but the benefits are usually minor and only last a year or so. Although a surgical blepharoplasty will not prevent skin ageing, the benefits will last for many years.
Post-Surgical Expectations and Complications
As with any surgical operation, there is some risk involved. Complications and poor outcomes from blepharoplasty are uncommon, but they do occur. The following are common post-procedure side effects:
Bruising- Bruising around the eyes is frequent and is a natural component of the healing process.
Swelling is also normal in the early stages of healing. This can also contribute to increased eye dryness.
Scarring- When an incision is made, a scar is typically formed. This can take up to a year to totally heal. Expect the scar to fade over time, eventually becoming unrecognisable. Because of their placement along the crease of the eyelid or lash line, these scars are usually naturally concealed.
Soreness. You should expect your eyelid to be sore and uncomfortable during the first few days after recuperation as your wounds heal. This is a natural component of the healing process as well. During the healing time, pain medication, either over-the-counter or by prescription, is usually offered.
Although additional side effects are less common, some patients may also experience any of the following temporary effects:
· Blurred vision
· Eyelid numbness
· Excessive or limited moisture in the eyes
· Eyelid pain
· Double vision
· Difficulty closing the eyes
Possible risks, although rare, can include:
· Infection and bleeding
· Injury to eye muscles
· The need for a follow-up surgery
· loss of eyesight
Risks linked with surgery in general, such as anaesthesia response and blood clots.
